2004 El Colegio de la Frontera Sur
El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR) is a public institution of scientific research and graduate studies. It has the goal of contributing to the sustainable development in the southern border of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, through the creation of knowledge and formation of human resources in connection with the social and natural sciences. It counts with five departments:

Systematics and Aquatic Ecology
Society, Culture and Health
Agriculture, Environment and Society
Sustainability Science
Biodiversity Conservation

The college has five campuses located in cities of the southern bordering states of Mexico, two of which are on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico: Campeche and Villahermosa. Additional campuses are in Chetumal, San Cristóbal and Tapachula.

The Department of Sustainability Science includes topics as artisanal fisheries and natural resources management in coastal areas with researchers in the campuses of Campeche, Villahermosa and Tapachula.

The Department of Systematics and Aquatic Ecology is entirely based in the Chetumal campus. Its researchers are involved in studies of aquatic flora and fauna, from continental water to the oceanic zone. Primary interests include zooplankton, continental and reef fishes, benthos and contamination. Priority is given to studies on threatened and endangered species, mainly marine turtles and manatees, as well as coral reefs.
