The benthos modify or influence most geological, chemical, and physical properties of shallow marine ecosystems, so research programs focus on the relationship between benthos and environmental factors in aquatic environments. The major research focus is on the effect of freshwater inflow on water quality and benthic populations, communities, and productivity. Other research related to environmental flows includes nutrient loading, hypoxia causes and biological effects, and oyster dynamics and restoration. A wide variety of tools are employed in these diverse studies including, invertebrate systematics and taxonomy, and water and sediment quality. Data is integrated using quantitative tools such as univariate and multivariate statistical techniques, ecological models, and geographical information systems. Data management and distribution is also a research focus.
