Horn Island
Horn Island is a large barrier island located in southeastern Mississippi. The island partly shelters Mississippi Sound to the north, Petit Bois Island to the east and Ship Island to the west. The Island is part of the Gulf Island National Seashore and owned and managed by the National Park Service. The area has been designated as a Wilderness Area (Gulf Islands Wilderness Area) and a Mississippi Coastal Preserve. The island’s beaches offer opportunities for fishing, camping, sunbathing, hiking, surfing and excellent bird watching. Coordinates: 30.23° N 88.68° W Nearest Largest City: Gulfport, Mississippi, USA Selected Characteristics: Area of Coverage: 11 km2 Community Structure: The ecological community on Horn Island is made up of nearshore subtidal estuarine habitat, an inland barrier island marsh/pond/lagoon complex with pine-oak maritime woodland, and sea grass beds and mollusc reefs offshore. Salt marshes and freshwater ponds found on the island provide habitats for a great diversity of aquatic and migratory bird species, such as the brown pelican, white pelican and cormorants. Least bitterns, mottled ducks, clapper rails, common moorhens, the least tern, the sandwich tern, the black skimmer, the Louisiana heron and ospreys are common breeders.
