Santa Rosa Island
Santa Rosa Island is a narrow barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and Santa Rosa Sound, in the vicinity of Pensacola, northwestern Florida. Santa Rosa forms the eastern tip of the Gulf Island National Seashore. It is the site of Fort Pickens, the largest of a group of forts designed to guard the island in the 1800’s, during the American civil war. Fort Pickens now houses an auditorium, a museum, and a visitor’s center offering information about the area. The island has magnificent beaches and is also a resort area.
